The Suez Canal posted a new record in the number of vessels crossing the canal on Saturday at 72 ships from both directions, with a total net tonnage of 4 million tons, achieving a daily revenue of $19.2 million.

Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority stated that the navigation in the canal has set new record for the numbers and tonnage of ships, in addition to the daily revenue achieved since the beginning of the year 2020.

Rabie pointed out that the navigation movement witnessed the crossing of 60 ships with a total net tonnage of 4.8 million tons and revenues of $ 20.9 million on January 1, while last Monday, 66 ships crossed Suez with a total net tonnage of 3.8 million tons, recording a daily revenue of $18.4 Million.

The head of the authority expressed his optimism toward the navigation statistics, which witnessed a surge in the numbers and tonnage, and its reflection on the growing revenues achieved in light of a strategy to develop navigation services provided.

The authority had announced, fixing transit fees for all types of vessels transiting the canal in 2020, excluding only two categories of ship types, namely dry bulk vessels and LPG tankers.

The authority said that it  decided to increase the transit fees for both categories by 5 percent, starting April 1 compared to last year's estimates.

It stated that the container ships, oil tankers, car carriers, general cargo and tractors, as well as cruise ships will benefit from the decision.
