Suez Canal Records Unprecedented Monthly Revenues at $ 515 Mln

Osama Rabie, Chairman of Suez Canal Authority said on Friday that the navigation statistics of the Canal during the month of October posted an unprecedented record in monthly revenues and net tonnages in the history of the Canal, achieving the highest monthly revenue of $ 515.1 million, and the largest monthly net tonnage with a total of 108.9 million tons.

He added in a statement that the traffic of the Canal during October, saw the crossing of 1790 vessels from both directions compared to crossing 1657 ships in October last year, a difference of 133 ships, an increase of 8%.

The total net tonnage amounted to 108.9 million tons compared to 103 million tons in October last year, a difference of 5.9 million tons, an increase of 5.7%.

Last August was the second largest monthly revenue in the canal's history  with a total of $ 510.1 million.

It is worth mentioning that the Suez Canal is the fastest shipping route between Europe & Asia and is one of the biggest sources of revenues to the Egyptian government.

The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea since it officially opened on 17 November 1869.
