Suez Canal Keeps Transit Fees Unchanged in 2020

The General Authority of the Suez Canal, the largest shipping lane in the world, announced on Saturday, the fixing of transit fees for all types of ships crossing the canal in 2020.

The authority stated In a statement that the decision excludes two categories of ship types, namely  bulk carriers and Liquefied Petroleum Gas tankers (LPG).

The transit fees for dry bulk vessels and LPG tankers would increase by 5 percent, compared to last year, provided that the planned increase will come into effect starting  April 1.

It stated that other container ships, including oil and natural gas tankers, car carriers, general cargo and tractors, cruise ships and other types will benefit from the decision.

On his part, Osama Rabie, Chairman of Suez Canal Authority pointed to the success of the flexible marketing and pricing policies pursued by the Authority during 2019 in attracting several new shipping companies that did not cross the canal.

Up to 3463 ships crossed the canal, which had a great impact towards increasing the market share of the Suez Canal, increasing the channel’s revenue by $ 731 million in 2019.

Revenues of the Suez Canal increased by 1.3 percent, to record $ 5.8 billion in 2019, according to a statement by the authority.
