Egypt’s Supreme Council of Universities has approved the establishment of a branch of Cairo University in Eritrea, in a move aimed at expanding the international presence of Egyptian higher education institutions and strengthening educational cooperation with African countries.

The decision was announced during the council’s regular meeting chaired by Abdelaziz Konsowa, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with the participation of university leaders and council members, including some attending via video conference.

During the meeting, the minister stressed the need to accelerate efforts to internationalise Egyptian universities and expand the export of higher education abroad. He directed the formation of a committee of academic experts to oversee the implementation of this strategy.

The council also approved the formation of an executive committee headed by former Administrative Development Minister and Cairo University engineering professor Ahmed Darwish to supervise the implementation of a comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system aimed at advancing digital transformation and administrative automation across universities.

Konsowa further instructed universities to continue updating academic programmes in line with the needs of local, regional and international labour markets. The directive applies to public, private, national and technological universities, as well as higher institutes, with a focus on improving graduates’ professional skills and employability.
