The Russian Space Agency provided that gift to Egypt to encourage the programs of the newly established agency.

The statue is also reflecting the Egyptian-Russian friendship and their mutual cooperation in various fields.

The ceremony began with the speech of the Russian Ambassador Geogry Borisniko saying: “We are honored to present this statue as a gift to the Egyptian people, a global figure who represented humanity and its dreams of penetrating space.”

“The astronaut visited several countries after returning from his successful trip, including Egypt in early 1962, during which the leader Gamal Abdel Nasser gave him the Nile necklace,” Borisniko added. “He toured several Egyptian cities and had a huge party held for him at Cairo Stadium.”

“This precious gift confirms the continuity and strength of the historical and fruitful relations with Russia,” Mohamed El-Qousi, Director of the Egyptian Space Agency, said.

“ Russia has an unforgettable role in Egypt's strategic projects such as the High Dam, iron factories, heavy industries and their military support in October War as well as the dream of generating electric power through the ‘Dabaa’ project.”

“Egypt does not forget the sincere gift of that country in its friendship, while this precious gift marks the beginning of a new cooperation in the field of space, which is going to start with a project to launch a satellite specialized in climate monitoring,” El-Qousi added.
