A Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from the Greek city of Thessaloniki after a passenger window shattered during the flight in a rare incident that nearly pulled one passenger out of the aircraft.

The flight, bound for Memmingen, Germany, returned safely to Thessaloniki after the mid-air emergency. According to Greek media, fellow passengers managed to pull the Serbian tourist back into the cabin after the sudden decompression.

Authorities said the passenger was taken to hospital with friction burns but is in good condition.

One passenger told a local radio station that most people had been asleep when they heard what sounded like a tire exploding, followed by a sudden loss of cabin pressure.

"The oxygen masks dropped, there was a strong smell, and the upper half of one passenger's body was outside the window. Fortunately, he was still wearing his seatbelt," the witness said.

Passengers seated nearby were able to pull the man back inside before the aircraft returned safely to Thessaloniki.

Videos shared on social media after the landing showed a damaged window and oxygen masks hanging from the cabin ceiling.

A similar incident in the United States in 2018 resulted in the death of a passenger. Aviation experts have noted that the extreme pressure difference between the cabin and the outside environment can partially pull an unsecured passenger through a broken window if they are not wearing a seatbelt.

Greek media reported that the incident occurred while the aircraft was flying over North Macedonia's airspace and that the window was allegedly damaged after debris detached from one of the aircraft's engines.

In a statement, Ryanair confirmed that the aircraft returned to Thessaloniki shortly after departure after a passenger window became detached during the flight. The airline said the aircraft landed safely, passengers were escorted back to the terminal, and a replacement aircraft was arranged to complete the journey to Memmingen, Germany.
