Disney's live-action "Hercules" producer Joe Russo shared an update about the remake.
In a new interview, Russo revealed that the project will find a way to honor the original origin story, while also updating it enough to have a "modern" spin for a new audience, which is the collective headspace that is in place for the redo.
"It will certainly pay homage to the original with a more modern spin on it. What Anthony and I love about the original is how funny and subversive it is. I think we try to embrace that sense of humor in the remake," he noted.
The producer added he and Anthony Russo want to make the remake with the same subversive wit and charm of the original animated smash, while still making sure that their remake pays tribute to the movie that won audiences over worldwide — including the brothers themselves.
"Hercules" is helmed by Guy Ritchie the project from a script penned by Dave Callaham, the screenwriter of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”.
The remake will be produced by AGBO, the production company run by Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and is still in the early stages of development.
The original “Hercules” was a musical fantasy retelling of the Greek legend, which followed Hercules, the son of the Greek God, Zeus, who is turned into a half-god, half-mortal by the evil Hades. Hercules discovers his immortal heritage and is told by Zeus to return to Mount Olympus.
Tate Donovan voiced the lead role, alongside Susan Egan as his love interest, Megara, James Woods as Hades, and Danny DeVito as Philoctetes/Phil.
The 1997 movie had 18 writers who worked on the story and screenplay. It was directed by Ron Clements and Jon Musker directed.
