On Wednesday, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lit up its headquarters with the word “Africa” in celebration of 2022 Africa Day, which commemorates the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963.

The Ministry's building lighting is an inspirational moment and a reminder that Egyptian-African ties have witnessed strong momentum in recent years.

According to a statement released by the Egyptian foreign ministry, the establishment of the OAU reflected the will of the African peoples to achieve independence and utilize their human and natural resources to achieve economic development and meet the people’s aspirations toward freedom, integration, and unity.

Egyptian-African relations have seen a strong momentum over the past years reinforced by a political will at the highest levels to boost relations with the African countries in the fields of economy, trade, health, and investments, the statement read.

“This has been reflected in the continuous coordination and consultation to achieve integration and unity and confront the traditional and non-traditional challenges facing our contemporary world,” the statement noted.

It also added that this momentum in Egyptian-African relations has been based on a firm determination to enhance the efforts of uniting the African ranks in the face of conflicts in different regions of the world, given their impact on the development process in African countries.

"Egypt has continued to consult with all African countries at the bilateral level on the concerns and issues facing the continent and has followed up on the global political and economic developments given the country’s leading role in the continent"

It's worth mentioning that this annual occasion aims to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.
