May 25th marks Africa Day, fondly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day.

The day marks the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963.

It also commemorated the Africans' liberation movements which were a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending the foreign occupation and raising a common consciousness based on solidarity and unity of the Continent.

On this date every year, the African states celebrate their Continent's independence and freedom anniversary by organizing a number of national activities that showcase the progress and impact of liberation movements on the African continent.

The day aims to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation, according to AU.

Africa Day is observed in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.

On this occasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulatory messages to heads of African states and governments; he particularly underlined that African states have reached significant progress in the economic and social spheres and play an increasing role in addressing current issues on the international agenda.

He also expressed his “heartfelt greetings” on the occasion of Africa Day, which has become the symbol of victory for Africa and is being celebrated across the continent today.

He revealed that his country values the traditionally friendly relations with its African partners, noting that the Russia – Africa Summit held in Sochi in 2019 allowed the two sides to outline new formats and areas for constructive interstate interaction.

"It is symbolic that this conference begins its work on the eve of Africa Day celebrated on May 25," Putin said.

"Constructive and multilateral cooperation is expanded, while mutually beneficial integration processes are advances in the framework of the African Union and several subregional organizations."

Meanwhile, the UN chief said in an upbeat message to mark the day on Wednesday: "On Africa Day, the world celebrates the perse and dynamic continent’s “enormous promise and potential."
