Walt Disney Animation’s “Zootopia 2” is now the studio’s highest-grossing movie in history with $1.46 billion at the global box office.

The animated sequel beat the previous record holder, “Frozen 2,” which made $1.45 billion in 2019.

“Zootopia 2” has grossed $333 million domestically and a whopping $1.13 billion overseas.

Over the Christmas holiday weekend, the sequel surged at the box office in its fifth week of release, adding $87.9 million to its already impressive tally.

It hit the coveted $1 billion milestone after just 17 days of release, and it was the fastest PG-rated movie in history to do so. It’s been a particularly huge success in China, where many Hollywood movies have floundered in recent years.

At the Chinese box office, “Zootopia 2” has already zoomed past $500 million, the highest total for a U.S. movie by far.

The only other film coming close is Disney’s recent release “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which is nearing $100 million after it premiered on December 19.

Including “Zootopia 2,” only three movies have crossed the $1 billion milestone globally this year: Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake, which has $1.03 billion and China’s animated “Ne Zha 2,” which stands as the year’s biggest movie with more than $2.2 billion.

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin as the rabbit Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as the clever fox Nick Wilde, “Zootopia 2” reunites the two critters as buddy cops in the sequel to Disney’s original 2016 hit.

This time, the two friends must discover a reptilian mystery that threatens to turn the animal haven of Zootopia upside down.

With global box office still falling short of pre-coronavirus pandemic 2019 levels, the sequel's success has been a welcome relief to the Walt Disney Animation studio and theater owners banking on packed shows during the year's second-busiest moviegoing season.
