The historic Al-Amir Taz Palace hosted an extraordinary archaeological evening organized by the Zahi Hawass Foundation for Antiquities and Heritage. During the event, Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, renowned Egyptologist and Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, presented a comprehensive review of one of the most significant recent discoveries in the Abusir region, titled "The Rediscovery of King Sahure’s Pyramid."
A Revolution in Pyramid Architecture: Long-Lost Storage Chambers
The lecture detailed the results of years of intensive research and excavation led by Dr. Khaled through the Egyptian-German mission.
Khaled revealed the specifics of hidden "magazines" and secret storage rooms within the pyramid of King Sahure (the second ruler of the Fifth Dynasty). These chambers had remained concealed for centuries. He noted that this discovery does more than just add new rooms to the archaeological map; it triggers a paradigm shift in our scientific and engineering understanding of how pyramid architecture and funerary structures evolved during the Old Kingdom.
The seminar highlighted how modern technology and advanced documentation techniques were instrumental in reaching these "lost corridors," a breakthrough that has since dominated headlines in global scientific journals. Dr. Khaled emphasized that Abusir remains a "hidden treasure" that continues to reshape our understanding of the Fifth Dynasty and the pyramid builders.
A Gathering of Archeological Experts and National Figures
The lecture concluded with an open scientific discussion enriched by a distinguished group of national and archaeological figures. The event was led by world-renowned archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees, and Dr. Mamdouh el-Damaty, former Minister of Antiquities.
The seminar saw wide official and academic attendance, including:
Mr. Ali Abu Dashish, Director of the Foundation.
Dr. Gamal Mostafa, Consultant to the Secretary-General for Islamic Antiquities.
Dr. Diaa Zahran, Head of the Islamic Antiquities Sector.
Ms. Lamia Yehia, Director General of Resource Development at the Ministry.
Dr. Khaled Hassan, Deputy Director of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
The evening also brought together directors of Islamic and Coptic museums, alongside heads of foreign archaeological institutes in Egypt.
