DC fans are scratching their heads at the latest Wonder Woman 3 development. In December 2022, just days after Gal Gadot expressed excitement about returning as the superhero character, it was announced that DC would not be moving forward with the franchise.

The news landed after James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped in as chiefs of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that a treatment for the movie “did not fit in with” the studio’s plans.

However, Gadot shared recently a positive update about the third installment and claimed DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran told her they would develop “Wonder Woman 3” together.

In an interview with ComicBook.com while promoting her upcoming Netflix action movie “Heart of Stone”, Gadot alluded to hearing from new DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran about developing a third “Wonder Woman” movie together.

“I love portraying Wonder Woman,” Gadot said when asked about the third movie. “It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a ‘Wonder Woman 3’ together.”

Gadot originated the role of Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, debuting in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” before leading two standalone movies: “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”

She also appeared in “Justice League” and had cameos in DC movies such as “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Her two standalone “Wonder Woman” movies were directed by Patty Jenkins. The duo was developing “Wonder Woman 3” together when Gunn and Safran were named the new heads of DC Studios.

She went on to state in a more recent interview with Flaunt magazine while promoting "Heart of Stone", ahead of the SAG-AFTRA Hollywood strikes.

“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman – you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”

However, Variety is reporting that there are no active plans to develop the movie and that there was never any definitive discussion with Gadot about returning as the character.

According to the sources, a third “Wonder Woman” movie is not in development at DC Studios nor do Gunn and Safran have plans at this time for any “Wonder Woman” project in the new DC Universe other than their previously announced “Paradise Lost” prequel series for Max.

The sources added that nothing was ever promised to Gadot regarding “Wonder Woman 3,” nor was there any definitive discussion of Gadot’s Wonder Woman continuing with the new DC Universe.

Gunn and Safran gave a presentation at the start of the year unveiling the first titles in their new DC Universe, including “Superman: Legacy,” and they continue to be laser-focused on these new movies.

This has prompted widespread confusion, with many fans questioning whether either Gadot or Gunn and Safran had been dishonest about the future of the project.

Some have asked why Gadot claimed Gunn and Safran had assured her a third Wonder Woman movie would happen not once, but twice, while others are pointing to the fact that Gunn, who regularly debunks incorrect claims about the DCEU, has not commented on Gadot’s comments.

For the most part, DC fans are comparing the situation to the Henry Cavill controversy, which saw the actor dropped as Superman weeks after returning in a post-credit scene for Dwayne Johnson’s film Black Adam.

Cavill later confirmed he would not be returning as the iconic superhero, just two months after telling fans that he would continue in his role following the Black Adam cameo.

“DC is still a hot mess,” one movie fan wrote in response to Variety’s report on Twitter.
