Universal Pictures' musical movie “Wicked", starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is flying into homes on New Year’s Eve with a load of deleted scenes, commentary and other extras.
Following its theatrical run, the smash-hit pic will be available exclusively to purchase or rent on December 31, 2024, on major digital platforms.
Bonus content in the digital release includes a singalong version, plus a 40-minute journey through Oz that “celebrates the film’s transformative on-screen magic,” and other material.
"Wicked” will also debut on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on February 4, 2025.
The movie set the record for the biggest opening for a movie based on a Broadway show ever and has grossed $392 million domestically to date.
It was nominated for four Golden Globes including best motion picture – musical or comedy and acting nods for Erivo and Grande.
Based on the stage play with music and lyrics by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, “Wicked” is directed by Jon M. Chu.
The movie also stars Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, and Jeff Goldblum.
"Wicked" is centered around the witches from the land of Oz and the unlikely friendship that is formed between The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
The musical is based on the 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire, which itself is a retelling of the 1900 L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, is told from the perspective of the witches.
The movie is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” and recounts everything that happened before Dorothy sauntered down that iconic yellow brick road — and tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, known as the Good Witch.
Earlier this month, Universal Pictures announced that it renamed the sequel to “Wicked: For Good.”
The movie, chronicling the second act of the Broadway show, is set to open in theaters November 21, 2025.
The exclusive bonus features in the digital release of “Wicked: Part One” include:
