Rising US actress Emma Myers, known for her role as Enid Sinclair on Netflix's acclaimed series Wednesday, has landed her next movie role.
Myers has closed a deal to star in Warner Bros and Legendary’s LMinecraft. She joins previously cast Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen in the feature.
An end-of-month start in New Zealand is being planned. This gives the movie plenty of wiggle room prior to its scheduled release date of April 4, 2025.
"Napoleon Dynamite" filmmaker Jared Hess will direct the adaptation, based on the popular video game.
Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, with Jill Messick receiving a posthumous producing credit for developing the movie before she died in 2018.
Executive producers include Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts.
"Minecraft" hails from Vertigo, co-financier Legendary, Mojang/Microsoft, and Momoa’s On the Roam.
Producers on the project include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui, and the late Jill Messick. EPs are Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts.
Minecraft debuted in 2011 and allows players to use blocks to create structures and worlds. It became a sensation, reaching 100 million users just a few years after launch and helping spark Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.
Warner Bros. has been developing a project based on the game for years, with Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney among those who have been attached to direct.
Movies based on video games have been on a hot streak in recent years, with Paramount finding success with its Sonic movies and 20th Century launching a hit franchise with Ryan Reynolds’ "Free Guy" last year.
Myers currently stars in the streamer’s Ed Helms comedy, Family Switch from McG. Her credits also include the TV series Dead of Night and The Baker and the Beauty as well as the movie The Girl in the Basement.
