Officials in the US state of Michigan say rescue and emergency teams are working to reopen a major highway after a massive multi-vehicle collision involving more than 100 cars and trucks during a powerful snowstorm.

Michigan State Police reported that multiple injuries were reported, but no fatalities have been confirmed so far.

The crash was triggered by dozens of large trucks and cars sliding and colliding with each other on Interstate 196, which was covered in snow and normally experiences heavy traffic.

According to Erm News, the accident involved up to 40 heavy-duty trucks, leaving the snow-covered highway closed for an extended period.

Authorities urged drivers to reduce speed amid "dangerous" weather conditions, as heavy snowfall continues and temperatures in northern Michigan are expected to drop to -22°C.

The National Weather Service warned that snowfall could reach 10 centimeters overnight, bringing total accumulation to 35.5 centimeters in parts of southwest and west-central Michigan.

The weather service advised people to avoid traveling to those areas.
