On Thursday, the US Embassy in Cairo and Cairo International Film Festival celebrated the success of the 45th edition of the festival.
The celebration was attended by several officials, ambassadors, and cinema stars.
During her speech at the event, the US Ambassador in Cairo Herro Mustafa Garg praised the role of the Egyptian cinema, highlighting the importance of cinema and filmmaking in connecting peoples and cultures together.
She also congratulated veteran actor Hussein Fahmy on the major success of the 45 edition of the festival, and the flourishing cooperation between the CIFF and the US Embassy in Cairo through the major workshops and sessions the US Embassy and Film Independent provided.
The US Ambassador told reporters: “Truly has been a remarkable week and we at
the US Embassy are very proud of the partnership that we have with the film festival.”
She added: “In the last five years we have awarded residencies to over 40 filmmakers,
Egyptian filmmakers to travel to Hollywood and this film festival we had two. We also had American workshops and we also had American filmmakers present their films. So we are so excited to be part of the film festival and this evening presented for the
first time, which will be an annual award, to an Egyptian filmmaker who works to build build the bonds between Egypt, and the United States.”
On creating an annual award to honor an Egyptian filmmaker or cinema star, and choosing Fahmy to win the award, the US Ambassador reveals: “This year,
the winner was Mr. Hussain Fahy for the incredible work that he has done over 60 years. Filmed over a hundred films, tens of TV series. He is an icon. He is a role model and he is a treasure. We are so proud to partner with him.“
On his side, Fahmy thanked the US Embassy for their continues cooperation with the festival and for the Egyptian cinema. He also praised the support of the US Embassy to the festival.
