The US has accused Cuba of running a decades-long espionage campaign that allegedly infiltrated the highest levels of the American government, escalating tensions between the two countries.

In a report released on Monday, the US State Department claimed Cuba recruited and supported agents inside the US government, describing the operation as one of the most persistent and damaging foreign intelligence campaigns in US history. The report also accused Havana of backing left-wing extremist groups to deepen political divisions in the US.

The allegations come as President Donald Trump intensifies pressure on Cuba through new sanctions and energy restrictions while maintaining a hardline policy towards the communist-led island.

Espionage between the US and Cuba has a long history, with several American officials previously convicted of spying for Havana. The Cuban government has not immediately responded to the latest accusations.
