Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, said that the blockade, hunger and diseases that millions of Gazans suffer from will soon become the main killer in Gaza.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, said that this “artificial” and catastrophic level of hunger can still be avoided by flooding Gaza with food and life-saving aid, if the political will exists.

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA pointed out that food should not be used as a weapon of war in Gaza, as this famine is man-made.

He stressed that in light of the unprecedented and rapidly developing famine in Gaza, I greatly appreciate all those who stand in solidarity with us from governments and civil societies, and all who support us by providing food and water to the people of Gaza, who number more than 2 million people.

In a statement he issued on Tuesday, the day before yesterday, which was World Social Work Day, Lazzarini expressed his pride in UNRWA employees for what they do for the people of Gaza.

Lazzarini said: Famine in northern Gaza is approaching very quickly, stressing that two million people in Gaza do not find safety, security, food, water, warmth, or electricity.

He confirmed that half of the population has exhausted their food, noting that this is the largest number recorded as people who cannot find food and suffer from hunger.

For its part, UNICEF said that the number of children under two years suffering from malnutrition has doubled in 30 days, and many of them are dying from dehydration and hunger.

UNICEF added that the famine occurring in Gaza is a man-made famine, and all governments must join hands to end this catastrophic situation, as it is a disgrace to all of humanity.
