UNESCO has designated Medellín in Colombia as the World Book Capital for 2027, recognizing the city’s long-term efforts to promote reading, literature and access to books.
The announcement follows a recommendation by the World Book Capital Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of international organizations of booksellers, publishers and authors.
According to UNESCO, Medellín has made significant progress in strengthening its reading culture, with the number of bookstores in the city rising by about 542% over the past seven decades. The city also leads Colombia’s national reading index, reflecting strong public engagement with books and literary programs.
The World Book Capital initiative highlights cities that demonstrate a commitment to promoting books, reading and literacy through year-long cultural activities and policies supporting the publishing sector.
UNESCO said Medellín’s selection reflects its sustained investment in libraries, community reading programs and inclusive cultural initiatives aimed at expanding access to knowledge and literature.
