UN Chief Says Syria Faces 'Moment of Possibility' During Landmark Damascus Visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said Syria has a "moment of possibility" to rebuild after years of conflict, urging an inclusive political transition and sustained international support during his first visit to the country since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's government. 

Speaking in Damascus on Saturday, Guterres said Syria had an opportunity not only to recover from more than a decade of war but also to build "a future that is more stable, more inclusive and more prosperous for all Syrians." 

The UN chief said Syria's recovery must be led by Syrians and grounded in accountability, reconciliation and respect for human rights, stressing that an inclusive political process would be essential to achieving lasting peace. 

Guterres also highlighted the country's severe humanitarian and economic challenges, noting that millions of Syrians continue to depend on humanitarian assistance.

He called on the international community to step up support for reconstruction, restore essential services and create conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced people. 

Guterres affirmed that the international engagement would be critical to helping Syrians seize what he described as a rare opportunity to rebuild their country after years of devastation. 

UN Chief's visit comes at a pivotal moment for Syria as the United Nations seeks to support the country's political transition and recovery following the collapse of the Assad government.
