The UN Adviser to Libya, Stephanie Williams called on the Libyan House of Representatives to set a specific timetable for holding elections in Libya.
Williams met the Road Map Committee at the Libyan Parliament’s headquarters in Tripoli. In a thread after the meeting, She said: “We had a positive initial meeting with the HoR Roadmap Committee at the Parliament office in Tripoli. I commended the committee on its perse membership and its spirit of unity and evident desire to build upon this renewed goodwill.”
She added: "The committee outlined its plan to meet within a short period of time a number of different constituencies and parties throughout Libya to discuss the constitutional track."
"I stressed the importance of a pragmatic and time-bound approach keeping in mind the need to preserve the momentum for elections, and honor the commitment to the 2.8 million registered voters in Libya."
She concluded: "I also offered the United Nations support in any efforts that help bring Libyans together to end the long transitional period."
Earlier, Stephanie Williams, the Special Adviser to the UN’s Secretary-General on Libya stressed on Wednesday, that elections are the only path to achieve peace in the country.
“I met today with HNEC Chairman, Dr. Emad Al-Sayeh, and board member, Mr. Abdul Hakim Al-Shaab. We discussed ways to consolidate and strengthen efforts to keep the electoral process moving forward,” Williams tweeted.
“I reiterated the full support of the United Nations and the international community to the HNEC as an independent institution in charge of the electoral process,” she added.
