Global giant Uber has launched “White Taxi” service in the Egyptian market, for the 1st time, with the aim of creating more economic opportunities for taxi drivers and providing more options for passengers.
The company started operating the new service several days ago; it will be officially announced within the upcoming weeks.
The opening price in the new service is set to reach EGP 7.25, and the price of one kilometer will record EGP 2.5, and 35 piasters per minute during waiting time.
Uber will receive a 19% commission from taxi drivers on the cost of each trip, including 2% VAT.
The international company employs more than 150,000 captain servicing customers via private cars through UberX and Uber Select services.
According to the White Taxi Drivers and Owners Association, the number of white taxis in Egypt reaches 376,000.
It is worth mentioning, last December, Egypt's Competition Authority (ECA) has approved US-based ride-hailing company Uber's pending acquisition of Middle East rival Careem after a months-long conflict over the merger deal with the authority.
Uber’s acquisition of its Middle Eastern rival Careem included mobility, delivery, and payments businesses across Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Careem has expanded rapidly over the past few years, now has over a million drivers and operating in more than 90 cities in 15 countries, according to its website.
It has also branched out into food and package deliveries, bus services, scheduled rides, and credit transfers.
