US President Donald Trump has said that an agreement with Iran is expected within “a few hours,” according to remarks reported by Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst.
Trump told Fox News that a deal with Tehran could be reached shortly, as Washington continues efforts to finalise an understanding aimed at easing tensions and addressing Iran’s nuclear programme.
According to the Fox News correspondent, Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with the Israeli strike on Beirut, saying he believed the attack “should not have happened” because it could disrupt ongoing negotiations.
The remarks come as the Trump administration appears to be moving towards the signing of an agreement with Iran, amid intense diplomatic efforts to reach a formal understanding.
In a separate statement to CBS News, US Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington was moving ahead with plans to sign an agreement with Iran on the same day.
Hegseth said Iran’s enriched uranium would be destroyed under the agreement, adding that the memorandum of understanding states that Tehran will never possess, seek or purchase a nuclear weapon.
He also said further talks would be held to finalise the mechanisms needed to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
According to Hegseth, the United States will take part in the process of disposing of Iran’s uranium. He added that a 60-day period had been set for reducing Iran’s uranium enrichment level.
