A US federal judge has ordered President Donald Trump to pay $5 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after a civil jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her.

The order follows the US Supreme Court's decision last week to reject Trump's appeal against the May 2023 verdict, making the judgment final. The original ruling awarded Carroll $2 million in damages for the assault and $3 million for defamation.

Judge Lewis Kaplan directed the release of the $5 million that Trump had deposited with the court, along with accrued interest, the amount of which has not been disclosed.

Carroll, an 82-year-old former journalist and columnist, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a New York department store in 1996. Trump denied the allegation after it was made public in 2019, claiming the accusation had been fabricated.

In a separate defamation case, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $83.3 million. That judgment has been upheld on appeal, although enforcement remains on hold.

Meanwhile, US media reported in late May that Carroll is under criminal investigation by the Justice Department over whether she gave false testimony under oath in statements related to the lawsuits against Trump.
