U.S. President Donald Trump said imported generic drugs will remain exempt from tariffs for two years before facing steep duties beginning Aug. 1, 2028, as part of a plan to encourage domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said imported generic medicines will continue to face a 0% tariff through Aug. 1, 2028. After that, they will be subject to a 100% tariff for one year, followed by a 200% tariff.

Trump said the policy is intended to bring generic drug production back to the United States and penalize companies that fail to build manufacturing facilities during the transition period. He added that the policy for patented and branded medicines would remain unchanged and said pharmaceutical plants are being built across the country at an unprecedented pace.
