Trump Demands Canada Pay Compensation over Wildfire Smoke

US President Donald Trump has called on Canada to compensate the United States for the impact of smoke from wildfires in Ontario, warning that Washington could impose tariffs if Ottawa fails to improve its response.

Speaking after returning from the FIFA World Cup final, Trump said he had urged Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to step up efforts to contain the fires, whose smoke has degraded air quality across several US border states.

Trump suggested Canada should "pay some compensation" for the damage or face additional tariffs, escalating pressure on Ottawa after previously threatening new duties on Canadian goods.

Smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Ontario has spread across large parts of the US since last week, affecting the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions and prompting health officials to issue air quality warnings and advise residents to limit outdoor activity.
