Production is now officially underway on "Tron: Ares", the third movie in the sci-fi franchise from Disney.

Last month, director Joachim Rønning confirmed that production had recommenced on the pic following the conclusion of the massively disruptive SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Director Joachim Rønning has taken to Instagram to confirm that principal photography is fully underway, with the caption "WEEK 1 ON THE GRID #tron".

Rønning has been particularly vocal in giving fans updates about the progress of the film, lamenting the postponement of shooting while also wholeheartedly backing the reasons for the delays in August 2023. He also shared some details about the plot.

"Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone," he told Collider at the time.

The movie stars Jared Leto in the titular role as Ares, the manifestation of a program that becomes sentient and crosses over into the human world, with “Past Lives” star Greta Lee as a video game programmer and tech company CEO who aims to protect her world-changing technology.

The cast also includes Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, and more.

Additional plot details are being kept under wraps.

The first “Tron” movie debuted in 1982 and follows the journey of Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer( Played by Jeff Bridges), who undergoes "digitization" and becomes integrated into a video game known as "Tron".

Within the digital environment, programs mirror human characteristics and adhere to specific rules tied to the restrictions and limits of the computer's hardware and software.

The movie flopped at the box office despite its groundbreaking innovations in digital visual effects.

Over time, “Tron” developed a cult following, leading to the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy,” starring Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde and helmed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”).

"Tron: Legacy" is centered around Kevin's son, Sam (played by Garrett Hedlund), who ventures into the Grid in search of his missing father, absent for nearly three decades.

In his quest, Sam encounters a significantly advanced society compared to the original movie, stumbling upon a cloned program of his father with aspirations to break free from the Grid and seize control of Sam's world.
