On Monday, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities inaugurated the Sultan Al-Muayyad Hospital in Souq Al-Silah in Cairo after its development. The project included the development of several archaeological sites in Fatimid Cairo and is part of the Integrated Management of Cultural Tourism (IMCT) project.
During the inspection of the project, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, stated that Al-Muayyad Sheikh Hospital in historic Cairo is one of the most important and largest living heritage areas registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. He emphasized the unique and diverse collection of antiquities in the area, which reflects Egypt's great civilization and maintains its homogeneous urban fabric.
The project, implemented in cooperation between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the United States Agency for International Development (USAD), aims to preserve Egyptian cultural heritage and present it in a way that guarantees a unique and original tourist experience. It also focuses on historic Cairo and Luxor, establishing a sustainable approach to managing cultural tourism sites.
The project aims to enhance the partnership between the public and private sectors, simplify regulatory frameworks, and develop partnership models to encourage private sector investment in cultural tourism sites. Additionally, it seeks to develop and promote cultural tourism experiences to benefit local communities and increase tourism revenues.
Over the years, the US government has invested more than $100 million to protect Egypt's cultural heritage and ensure local communities benefit from the growing tourism industry. Furthermore, USAID is collaborating with the Egyptian government to protect important archaeological sites from rising groundwater levels and to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism.
