Today, (Oct. 8) marks the 21st death anniversary of Ahmed Mazhar, a legendary Egyptian actor known for his portrayal of the Muslim leader, Sala El-Din.

Mazhar was born in Cairo on October 4, 1917, to a Turkish and Circassian family. He grew up in the old districts of Cairo and attended Sa’daia Military School.

Mazhar was a distinguished soldier who served as Chief of Army Staff and the head of the Army Knights department in the 1940s and 1950s. After leaving the Armed Forces, he began his career in Egyptian cinema and theatre. He made his debut in the film 'El Naser Salah El-Dine,' directed by Youssif Shahin, where he played the role of a brave Muslim leader.

Mazhar's breakthrough came with the movie 'Roda Qalby,' which he co-wrote with the well-known writer Youssaif ElSba’ay. He went on to star in many successful historical films like "Wa Islamah" and "Al-Shaimaa" and critical films like "The Curlew Prayer," "Djamilah," "Cairo 30," "Soft Hands," "I Won’t Confess," "The Last Night," "Nadia," and "The Empire of M".

Throughout his career, Mazhar strived to prove that his success was not fleeting. He was capable of staying the course and reaching the highest pinnacles of appreciation and endearment. His co-star Salah Zulfikar said that Mazhar proved his impeccable capability and artistic talent.

Mazhar had a special connection with Faten Hamama, who was his favorite co-star. In "The Last Night" movie, Hamama knew exactly when to hold Mazhar and when to let him go on camera, according to renowned critic Tarik Elshenawy.

Mazhar received several awards for his immense contribution to Egyptian cinema, including the Cairo Festival Award and Alexandria Festival Award. He passed away in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of memorable roles.
