Today marks the 33rd death anniversary of Ihsan Abdel-Quddous, whose novels still constitute a bedtime treat for thousands of Egyptians.

Known for the "I am Free" novel, Quddous was one of the most realistic documentarians of women's plights. He occupies a unique position in literature.

The author, who won the Order of the Republic of the First Class, authored 600 books, including a number of novels, short stories and poems, works of non-fiction, and two collections of short stories.

Born in Egypt to Lebanese journalist Rose al Yusuf and Egyptian actor Mohamed Ihsan Abdel Quddous, in 1919, Quddous was an Egyptian novelist, journalist, and author of several short stories.

Throughout his long-standing career, Quddous wrote a multitude of varied books, some of which were among the bestsellers of the past four decades in Egypt.

He was also well known for his daily column in Al-Ahram newspaper and” The Bullet is Still in my Pocket” novel. Published in the 1960s, the book has a very clear political message, and even though Ihsan had put the famous disclaimer to disassociate his protagonists from any real-life characters, it was very clear who he was talking about some of his well-known books tackle the women empowerment and the gender equality issues.

Quddous was awarded numerous literary accolades. In the 1960s, he won the Best Screenplay award for his novel "The Bullet is Still in my Pocket", administered by the Supreme Council of Culture. After a while, he claimed Gamal Abdel Nasser’s Order of Merit of the First Class for Literature.

His books “The Investigation,” “Please Give me this Medicine,” “Legitimate Days,” “The Dancer and the Drummer” and “The Dancer and the Politician,”) turned into a number of notable films and famous series.

His works have been translated into several foreign languages including English, French, German, Ukrainian, and Chinese languages. Ihsan also co-founded the Egyptian Story Club.

“The Battles of Love and Politics” is among his best-known books.
