On December 16, the silver screen will welcome once again the return of the mythical world of Pandora in James Cameron's much-anticipated "Avatar: The Way of Water".

Avatar fans have been waiting thirteen years for its sequel, which starts ten years after the original.

It remains the highest-grossing movie of all time, hitting more than $2.7 billion at the global box office. It is currently streaming on Disney+ and had a theatrical re-release earlier this year.

While details on the long-delayed sequel remain under wrap, even as the days to its mid-December release draw close.

The hugely-expensive sequel is set to feature a soundtrack by Canadian singer and producer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, known professionally as the Weeknd.

The "Blinding Lights" hitmaker announced Saturday on Twitter that he will present a brand-new song in the movie.

He also shared a short teaser of the sequel's logo, with the date “12.16.22” beneath it.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" producer Jon Landau welcomed the R&B musician to the Avatar family in a Na'vi-language post shared on Twitter.

"As the Na’vi say, “Zola'u nìprrte' soaiane Avatar”… Welcome to the Avatar family," he tweeted on Saturday.

Directed by James Cameron, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return as Jake and Neytiri. They now live in Pandora with their family.

Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet also star in the movie.

Cameron, who has been working on the sequel since 2013, said previously that for the movie to be profitable, it will “have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

The movie is the first of four “Avatar” sequels planned. An untitled third “Avatar” movie is set for release on December 20, 2024.
