Production began on the highly-anticipated The Walking Dead spinoff series about Rick Grimes and Michonne.

Principal photography on the series began last week in New Jersey. The untitled project consists of six episodes and will debut next year on AMC+.

The series is one of many spin-offs in the expanding Walking Dead universe. The Walking Dead Universe includes "Fear The Walking Dead", which premiered in 2015, and the upcoming spin-offs that feature fan-favorite characters from the original series including "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon" and "The Walking Dead: Dead City" which will follow Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The series was based on a comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman.

The project will tell the epic love story of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne Grimes (Danai Gurira), two of the original series' most beloved characters.

They are kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”.

Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Lincoln and Gurira. Denise Huth and Brian Bockrath also executive produce the series.
