One of 20th Century Studios’ classic Gregory Peck titles is getting a new retelling with one of the movie’s biggest fans on board to help develop.

Sources say that Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke is on board to pen a new reimagining of the 1950 Peck western "The Gunfighter" for 20th Century Studios.

Hawke will co-write the script with his writing partner Shelby Gaines.

Insiders added the four-time Oscar nominee only has a deal to write and produce as of now.

The movie is in early development.

The original film follows the notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo (Peck), who rides into town to find his true love, who doesn’t want to see him. He hasn’t come looking for trouble, but trouble finds him around every corner.

Hawke has talked about how "The Gunfighter" is one of his favorite films of all time.

In the TCM special 2 for 1, Hawke tells host Ben Mankiewicz about discovering the film as an adult after listening to the Bob Dylan song “Brownsville Girl,” where a Peck western in mentioned multiple times.

Hawke added that after racking his brain about what film this was, he reached out to his friend and longtime collaborator Richard Linklater, who pointed him in the right direction.

Hawke recently wrote, directed and produced "Wildcat" starring his daughter, Maya Hawke, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
