Tahrir's Egyptian Museum Project to Cost 3.1 Million Euros

The development project at Egyptian Museum will soon start and it is expected to cost 3.1 million euros.

Ministries of Antiquities, Investment &International Cooperation and the European Union Delegation in Egypt held a press conference at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to announce the kicking off of the museum development project.

The event was attended Dr. Khaled El Anani Antiquities Minister, Dr. Sahar Nasr, Investment Minister, Ivan Sorkosh European Union Ambassador and 40 other ambassadors.

The project works include the rearrangement of the ground floor halls exhibition, numbers 43, 48, 47, 46, 51, 49, 50, museum entrance and re-presenting the archaeological collection ''Tanis royal tombs''.

Financed by 3.1 million euros of EU funding and backed by a consortium of five European museums including the British Museum and the Louvre, the project will also develop a long-term vision for the museum and, officials hope, allow it to win a listing as a UNESCO world heritage site.

El-Enani reported that that new museums would not pose a threat and the Egyptian Museum, which houses more than 150,000 objects, should get all the support and attention.

El-Enani added that the time has come to shed a new light on the museum’s rich collection, upgrade its physical structure and improve its research and programming activities to reach the highest international standards.

Friederike Seyfried the Egyptian Museum director in Berlin, who is participating in the project, explained that the museum is the mother of Egyptian museums. Also, she added nothing can be compared with the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir and this will never change.
