Sulaf Fawakherji has been tapped to play Tota, the first actress in the history of Syria, in the TV series "Layali Roxy" (Roxy Nights).
The drama hails from director Mohamed Abdel Aziz and tells the story of the first silent feature made in Syria in 1928, "Almutaham Albari".
"We tell her story in a conservative society in the 1920s. She loves acting and learning about international cinema. She tries to act in the street and the neighborhood with women, but her passion is greater," Fawakherji said."Her love for acting — her passion — led her to leave her family and partner to achieve her dream despite all the difficulties, and the series has a large comedic component."
"Layali Roxy" is set to debut during the Ramadan 2025 drama marathon.
Moreover, Fawakherji participated last Ramadan in a cameo appearance in the TV adaptation of the 1972 film "Embratoreyet Meem" (Empire M).
The cast also starred Khaled El Nabawy, Hala Shiha, Nour El-Nabawy, Nashwa Moustafa, Mahmoud Hafez, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdulaziz, Rasha Mahdi, Eman Al Sayyed, Hagar ElSarrag, and more.
The reimagining, consisting of 30 episodes, hailed from director Mohamed Salama and scriptwriter Mohamed Suleiman Abdel Malek. Aroma Studios is the studio behind the series.
"Embratoreyet Meem" follows a Mona (Faten Hamama), a widow raising her six kids besides her work.
She gradually falls in love with businessman Ahmed (Ahmed Mazhar) but doesn't give in to her feelings easily being torn apart between her devotion to her children and her future with Ahmed.
The film featured a cast that included Faten Hamama, Ahmed Mazhar, Hesham Selim, Dawlat Abyad, Ali Gawhar, Saif Abo El Naga, Nagyat Kandel, and others.
Filmmaker Hussein Kamal directed the pic from a script by Ihsan Abd al-Qudus and Mustafa Samy.
