The live-action "Street Fighter" movie, based on the video games from Capcom, has moved from Sony to Paramount. The film, which is co-produced by Capcom, will be released next year.

Paramount's press release for the Street Fighter movie updated fans, sharing that it is currently in production and is being filmed for IMAX and now has a scheduled theatrical release date of October 16, 2026.

The pic marks the beginning of a new multi-year worldwide film distribution deal between Legendary and Paramount.

Legendary is known for translating IP with dedicated fanbases like Street Fighter to film, with past examples including A Minecraft Movie, Dune, Godzilla x Kong, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Enola Holmes.

The new Street Fighter film promises to "honor the quarter-pumping, button-mashing spirit of the 90s classic while leveling up for a new generation of fans."

Its story will be set in 1993, with estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Centineo) thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) manages to recruit them for the World Warrior Tournament. What ensues is a brutal battle of fists, fate and fury — but the film teases a deadly conspiracy that will have the characters also facing the demons of their past.

Kitao Sakurai, who directed the first two episodes of Prime Video's hit series Butterfly with Daniel Dae Kim, will helm the new Street Fighter movie.

Besides Koji, Centineo and Liang, the film also stars Joe "Roman Reigns" Anoa'i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric Andre as Don Sauvage, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim. It will also feature appearances from Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson as Balrog and Jason Momoa as Blanka.

Josh Greenstein, Co-Chair of Paramount Pictures / Vice Chair of Platforms, and Dana Goldberg, Co-Chair of Paramount Pictures and Chair of Paramount Television teased the new partnership and Street Fighter film, saying: "Legendary has built a reputation for ambitious, globally appealing films, and we’re excited to be partnering with them. Street Fighter is the perfect start to our collaboration, which we believe will be strong and lasting."

The team at Legendary also spoke about their new partnership with Paramount in the press release. Legendary CEO Josh Grode said: "Partnering with David, Dana and Josh and their teams at Paramount marks an exciting new chapter for Legendary as we continue to pursue a diversified growth strategy — expanding our output, building new franchises, and creating more films for global audiences. This partnership is an extraordinary opportunity, and we look forward to working closely with Paramount on stories that will captivate and inspire moviegoers worldwide."

Paramount Pictures brings its global distribution power to the deal, with a proven record of box office successes including "Top Gun: Maverick," "Sonic the Headgehog," "Mission: Impossible", and many more.

While the new deal pushes forward, Warner Bros. will continue to distribute select Legendary franchises — including "Dune: Part Three," which is currently in production and scheduled to release in 2026, as well as "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova," which is eyeing a 2027 release.

"Street Fighter" movie will arrive in theaters on October 16, 2026.
