"The Institute" will be back for a second round. MGM+ has renewed the thriller series based on the 2019 Stephen King novel for another eight-episode second season.
"The Institute," which ranks as the best premiere ever on MGM+, comes from King, who executive produces, Jack Bender (Lost, Game of Thrones, Mr. Mercedes, From), writer and executive producer Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand) and MGM+ Studios.
The series follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) who is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did, and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.
Season one starred Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) and and an ensemble cast that included Simone Miller (Run the Burbs), Fionn Laird (Under the Banner of Heaven), Jason Diaz, and Jane Luk. Casting for Season 2 will be announced at a later date.
“Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute and I can’t wait,” King said King.
The series will premiere exclusively on MGM+ in the U.S., UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. Amazon MGM Studios Distribution will distribute in all other international territories.
