The release date and official trailer for the movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel "Salem’s Lot" has been unveiled.
Written and directed by Gary Dauberman, "Salem’s Lot" is set to be the first adaptation of King's acclaimed vampire novel to play in theaters.
The adaptation was first announced in 2019 and was initially slated for a theatrical release in September 2022, before being delayed multiple times and shifted to Max.
The movie is not the first adaptation of the book. Four years after publication, the novel was turned into two-part CBS miniseries starring David Soul as Mears, which was nominated for three Emmy Awards. A feature film sequel to the miniseries, “A Return to Salem’s Lot,” was released in 1987.
A television movie was released in 1979, directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Rob Lowe. A new miniseries adaptation starring Lowe premiered on TNT in 2004. In 2021, Epix premiered “Chapelwaite,” a series based on King’s prequel short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire.
"Salemʻs Lot", published in 1975, follows the journey of author Ben Mears who is struggling with writer’s block and seeking inspiration for his next novel, returns to his hometown, the eerily named Jerusalem's Lot, to find some, particularly in the form of an abandoned mansion, owned by a strange European man. Upon further investigation, Mears realizes that there is an evil turning the residents of the town into creatures of the night — namely, vampires. He creates a small team of trustworthy townsfolk and set out to end the vampire menace plaguing their home.
Director Dauberman is a favorite of New Line, having worked on several projects for the studio, including both the It movies and "The Nun".
The movie cast is led by Lewis Pullman, who played featured roles in "Bad Times at the El Royale" and "Top Gun: Maverick," as Ben Mears, along with Games of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk as Richard Straker, who is preparing for the arrival of his master, a vampire named Kurt Barlow.
The star-studded cast also features Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, Bill Camp as Matthew Burke, Spencer Treat Clark as Mike Ryerson, Pilou Asbæk as Straker, and John Benjamin Hickey as Father Callahan.
Other EPs on the pic are James Wan and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster and Roy Lee for Vertigo alongside Mark Wolper. Other EPs are Michael Bederman, Vertigo’s Andrew Childs, and Atomic Monster’s Judson Scott.
"Salem’s Lot” will premiere on Max on October 3.
