Netflix blockbuster dystopian show “Squid Game" is set to be remade into an English-language adaptation.
American acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher has been working on the project for a couple of years, with a writer attached, and currently penning the project.
Per The Playlist, Fincher has been working quietly for the past two years on an American, English-language version of the hit South Korean series Squid Game for Netflix.
The director has tapped British scribe Dennis Kelly to write his version of Squid Game. Kelly wrote the source material for "Utopia", which Fincher almost helmed for HBO before the project fell apart due to budget issues. Per his exclusive deal with Netflix, Fincher was reportedly developing a Chinatown prequel series for the streamer in 2019. When Squid Game premiered and became a global phenomenon in 2021, the filmmaker decided to pivot, putting Chinatown on hiatus.
The current status of Fincher's Squid Game adaptation remains unclear, but his pivot from the reportedly completed Chinatown appears to indicate that the remake will be his next project.
Netflix has not made any official comment regarding the adaptation, with the head of the streamer, Ted Sarandos, even contradicting reports it was even in development. "Since the main series is still ongoing, there’s no justified reason for Netflix to do a remake," he said earlier this year.
The original Squid Game's second season arrives this December.
Series star Lee Jung-jae has teased that the upcoming second season of Squid Game will have plenty of "twists and turns," with a story that will keep the audience guessing.
The Emmy award-winning actor highlighted the emotional depth of the show's script and the unexpected direction it will take the audience. "I think the script for Season 2 is even more interesting than Season 1, and there is going to be a new set of characters as well. So I think the audience is going to be really excited about it," he said.
The Acolyte actor continued, "One thing I felt while reading the script is that there is an even deeper emotion that's discovered within Season 2, and also I think the audience will feel like, 'Where is this story going?' Because there's so many twists and turns that happen."
