German legendary rock band Scorpions sparked controversy after announcing their concert in Egypt on October 15.
The announcement triggered backlash on social media, with many users demanding the cancellation of the event, citing the band’s history of supporting Israel.
Circulating images showed the group performing with Israeli flags at previous shows, alongside their concerts held in occupied territories.
The controversy deepened when the band reaffirmed its support for Israel in a Facebook statement following the war on Gaza.
They said: "We are deeply shocked by the inhumane attacks that took place on the morning of October 7 against Israel. Many innocent civilian lives were lost; young people dancing to music at a festival, dreaming of love and peace."
On Wednesday morning, Egypt’s State Council officially cancelled the Scorpions’ Cairo concert over the band’s support for Israel and its backing of military actions in Gaza, Sada El Balad website reported.
Lawyers Amr Abdel-Salam and Essam Rifaat confirmed the decision in social media posts, stating that a ruling had been issued to halt the event.
Abdel-Salam asserted that more than 44,000 tickets have been refunded to buyers.
Following the ruling, the organizing company deleted promotional material for the Cairo concert from its platforms, leaving only advertisements for the band’s upcoming show in Abu Dhabi on October 20.
The Egypt date was also removed from the official October tour schedule on the group’s website.
