Sarah Michelle Gellar has been tapped to play Dexter Morgan’s new boss at the Miami Metro Police Department in the upcoming “Dexter” prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin.”

Set in 1991 Miami, “Dexter: Original Sin” follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Gellar will play the special guest star role of Tanya Martin, the CSI chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s new boss.

She joins the previously announced cast members starring in the “Dexter” prequel series including Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Patrick Dempsey as Aaron Spencer, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka, and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt.

Best known for her iconic role as Buffy Summers in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Gellar’s other notable TV credits include Paramount+’s “Wolf Pack,” CBS’ ”The Crazy Ones”  opposite Robin Williams and CW’s “Ringer.”

“Dexter: Original Sin” is produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios and will air on Paramount+ With Showtime, the linear channel formerly known as just Showtime.

Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner and executive producer on “Dexter,” returns in that role for “Original Sin.”

Hall is also an executive producer on the series, as are Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns.

Michael Lehmann, the director of “Heathers,” will serve as director and executive producer. Robert Lloyd Lewis is a producer on the series.

Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios produce. Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif will oversee for Showtime Studios, with production supervised by Tara Power.

“Dexter: Original Sin” is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ markets.
