Kraschennikov Volcano, in Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia, erupted for the first time in 600 years. This marks a rare geological event that may be linked to the powerful earthquake that struck the region last week, according to Russian media outlets on Sunday.

Olga Gerina, head of the Kamchatka Volcano Response Team, stated, “This is the first historically confirmed eruption of the Kraschennikov Volcano in six centuries.” She added that the volcanic activity may have been influenced by the earthquake that occurred last Wednesday, which also triggered tsunami warnings in distant areas like French Polynesia and Chile.

Russian authorities also noted that the eruption was followed by increased activity at the Klyuchevskoy Volcano, the most active volcano in Kamchatka.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that an ash plume rose to a height of 6,000 meters into the sky.

They also mentioned that the Kraschennikov Volcano, which stands at 1,856 meters tall, had its activity classified at the "orange level" for aviation, signaling a potential danger to air traffic in the region.
