Roman Fort Remains Unearthed in Aswan

On Monday, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiques announced that an archeological mission unearthed the remains of a Roman fort in Aswan.

The discovery was made by the Egyptian archaeological mission working in Hisn Shiha site, Aswan.

Alongside the remains of the fort, the remains of the ancient church was found, which dated back to the early Coptic period.

On his part, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Dr. Mostafa Waziri said that the mission unveiled various elements of the temple of Ptolemy, an incomplete sandstone panel, pictures with a model of the entrance to the temple and a man in the form of a Roman emperor standing next to an altar surmounted by part of a deity, in addition to four blocks of sandstone with palm fronds engraved on them, cartouches of Ptolemaic kings and late hieratic inscription and one of the emperors of Greece.

The mission also unearthed some parts of the church such as part of an ancient fence, four rooms and a hall, stoves, and stairs according to the director of the Central Administration of Upper Egypt Antiquities.
