“Nosferatu” director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s the 1986 cult fantasy movie “Labyrinth” for TriStar Pictures.

Eggers is writing the project with his writing partner Sjón, while Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing alongside Lisa Henson. Brian Henson is executive producing.

The sequel originally had Scott Derrickson set to direct.

Talking about the status of the project for TriStar Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures in 2023, Derrickson admitted it was “a tough nut to crack” and apparently exited after that.

The script had been set to be written by Maggie Levin, and it was being described as a sequel at the time.

Directed by Jim Henson, the original “Labyrinth” starred David Bowie as the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as a teenager who must save her baby brother, along with a slew of Henson puppets, in an imaginative musical fantasy.

While the pic bombed at the box office, it found a generation of fans on home video and television and became a beloved cult movie, leading to tie-in novels and comic books, video games, retrospective screenings and a fan masquerade ball.

Eggers, whose “Nosferatu” scored four Oscar nominations, will also reteam with Focus Features for “Werwulf,” a werewolf horror set in the 13th century that’s being released in December 2026.

Eggers told Indiewire recently that he was also interested in doing a Western and a medieval project, “The Knight.”
