Restoration Project of “Mashhad Al Tabataba” Finally Complete

The Ministry of Tourism, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, transferred the archeological scene of “Mashhad Al Tabataba” to its new site near the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat.

The transferring process aims to save and protect the scene, which was suffering from the poor architectural condition due to the high level of sulfur water in its old site on the edge of Ain el-Sira Lake, where the height of the water reached about 2.70 meters.

On his part, Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, noted that the restoring project was carried out in accordance with the necessary engineering and construction studies developed by specialists after the approval of the Permanent Committee of Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities.

Moreover, Waziry added that the project began in January 2021 at a value of EGP d million 6, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities.

Dr. Osama Talaat, the Head of the Islamic, Coptic, and Jewish Antiquities Sector, affirmed that the dissembling and transferring were carried out according to recognized scientific methods.

Talaat added that Mashhad Al Tabataba is a mausoleum, established in the fourth century AH, tenth century AD, and built by Muhammad ibn Tughj al-Ikhshid, founder of the Ikhshidid state, between the years 935 AD and 946 AD.⁩
