Sony will release Columbia Pictures’ “Resident Evil” domestically on September 18, 2026.
Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, Zach Cregger is directing the project from a script he co-wrote alongside Shay Hatten.
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film.Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.
Cregger’s credits as a writer-director include “Miss March,” “The Civil War on Drugs” (both alongside Trevor Moore) and, most recently, “Barbarian.”
He also produced the 2025 movie “Companion” and is next writing, directing and producing the Josh Brolin- and Julia Garner-led horror film “Weapons” for Warner Bros., out January 2026.
The original “Resident Evil” released as a PlayStation game in 1994, but was later ported to a number of different consoles.
There have been six previous “Resident Evil” films, beginning with the Milla Jovovich- and Michelle Rodriguez-led “Resident Evil” in 2002.
Jovovich went on to lead the subsequent “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (2004), “Resident Evil: Extinction” (2007), “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (2010), “Resident Evil: Retribution” (2012), and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” (2017).
In 2021, Johannes Roberts wrote and directed the franchise reboot “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.”
The franchise has collectively grossed over $1.2 billion at the global box office.
