New Israeli reports revealed that the police had hacked the phones of a large group of businessmen, protest leaders, and politicians, in addition to the son of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

And the Hebrew newspaper Calcalist revealed, in a new report, that many politicians, directors of government ministries, businessmen, protest leaders, mayors, and journalists were spied on through a spyware program produced by NSO.

The report also said that the police’s electronic special operations unit had used the spyware for years against civilians without court approval and in direct violation of the law, and that the technology was used to gather intelligence, not evidence.

Calcalist recently published a series of reports alleging that the police used sophisticated spyware to target protesters and citizens, which prompted all sides of the political spectrum to call for investigations.

It is said the programs were also used on the phones of Netanyahu’s son, Avner, two of his advisers, and the wife of another defendant in the corruption case against Netanyahu.

Calcalist reported that some of the spying operations are linked to the "Pegasus" software, produced by Israeli technology company NSO, that allows operators to seamlessly infiltrate phones and access their contents, including real-time communications.
