Despite the fact that 2021 was never expected to see a full recovery for cinemas,  global showbiz managed to win back audiences at that time after sustained closures across multiple markets.

According to a new report by IDSC that reviews the recovery of global cinema revenues, the global box office rebounded to $21.3 billion in 2021, increased of 81%.

After the decline in world cinema revenues due to the repercussions of COVID-19, global box office revenues increased from $11.8 bn in 2020 to $21.3 bn in 2021, noted the IDSC report.

It also showed that the Asia-Pacific region ranked first in box office revenues in 2021 with $10.9 bn, while the EMEA region came second with $5 bn; moreover, the USA and Canada came third on the list with $4.5 bn.

In Asia, China topped the box office revenue list with $7.3 bn, and Japan ranked second with $1.5 bn.

In the same connection, Egypt, which is a part of the MENA, has recovered to slightly under half its pre-pandemic levels, finishing the year with EPG 400 mm.

It's worth mentioning that the theatrical venues across the two spheres have also been severely depressed in the past three years due to the world-imposed COVID restrictions, audience caution, and a paucity of newly released local titles.
