Today marks the death anniversary of Vincent Van Gogh, the legendary Dutch artist, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

Born in 1853 in the Netherlands, he lived during the golden age of creativity in Europe, alongside many influential artists of the 20th century.

Van Gogh has been hailed as the pioneer of the modern oil painting school and is widely revered as one of the greatest artists of all time. He is well-known for his iconic works like Starry Night, while his introspective self-portraits also receive significant recognition.

Vincent van Gogh created over 2,100 artworks, including a simple portrait of a peasant woman. Painted in 1885, just before the artist moved from his native land to the artistic circles of Paris, the painting features a rather somber young woman in a voluminous white cap.

Interestingly, van Gogh's paintings did not sell during his lifetime, and he was generally considered a madman and a failure. However, some collectors recognized the value of his work. It was only after his death that his fame grew, and he became regarded as a misunderstood genius in the public imagination.
