Today (Oct. 15) marks the 74th birth anniversary of renowned Egyptian star Hadi El-Gayar, best known for playing Refaai “El Ekhteyar” (The Choice).

El-Gayar was born in October 1949 and received his BA from the acting department at the High Institute of Theatrical Arts in Cairo in 1963. He gained recognition for his role in the popular play "Madraset Elmoshaghbeen" (School of Rowdies).

El-Gayar was known for his seminal works such as "AlKafr Delhab" (2017), "The Other Face" (1987), "Almal wal Banun" (Fortune and Progeny), "Elraya Elbeida" (The White Flag), and "Alnawares wal Soqur" (Albatrosses and Falcons) directed by the maven film director Ibrahim Al-Shawady.

His work focused on local issues and Egyptian society, and he collaborated with legendary actors like Adel Emam and Ahmed Zaki.

He contributed minimally to the Egyptian cinema industry, with his 1971 film "Thom Tashreq Alshams" (Then The Sun Rises), directed by Ahmed Diaa-Aldien, and "Ihtares Esabet Alnisaa" (Watch Out for the Women's Clan) (1986).

El-Gayar passed away shortly after he was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Al-Harm district, Giza governorate. The cause of his death was Coronavirus, although he had reportedly suffered from heart problems that eventually led to a heart attack.
